LiDAR-based Forest Inventory to Support Enhanced Forest Management to Minimize Damage from Mountain Pine Beetle Infestations

Description: Tesera Systems Inc. was retained to undertake a pilot project designed to test the applicability of LiDAR technology to address critical forest inventory information needs within the province of Alberta; particularly as they pertain to the ability to manage for, and rapidly respond to, MPB infestations and other related values (specifically in the SLS FMA).  We are also assessing the use of the LiDAR data to create value added products.  The LiDAR data has an increased resolution of terrain and vegetation data which should allow organizations to better respond to, and assess the following MPB related issues :
  • MPB management and operational needs (improve inventory information, stand susceptibility modeling, forest re-inventory, understory assessment, rapid operational planning/response, access planning, stand sequencing to reduce susceptibility to MBP, salvage recovery planning);
  • habitat values & habitat risk modelling for protected and endangered species (improved linkage between high resolution inventory and vegetation data and habitat assessments - contributes to a better understanding of how habitat values and habitat risk will be affected during, and after, MPB outbreaks);
  • re-testing road and hydrologic planning data with higher resolution DEM (i.e. to better respond to MPB outbreaks in terms of avoiding, or minimizing impact to, wetlands and water courses when accessing areas for MPB tree removal)

Detailed Forest Management Plan

Description: The Detailed Forest Management Planning process is based on a rolling 10-year timeframe.  This process has at it's core: (1) an evaluation of the current land base and assumptions around growth and yield, ecological processes, wildlife, and water; (2) a public involvement process; and (3) an evaluation various indicators (critical habitat, fragmentation, etc.) with respect to future resource use.  Objectives and and management strategies have been spatially and temporally forecasted and analyzed using Tesera’s modelling technologies, including the Tesera Treatment Unit model, the Linear Feature Projection Model and the Tesera Scheduling Model.  The technologies, automated reporting tools and standard operating procedures used by Tesera staff enabled this project to be completed under very short timelines

Sustainable Forest Management Plan

Description: Tesera Systems Inc. was retained by Tweedsmuir Forest to undertake scenario planning, forest resource analysis to support the development of a Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) Plan for the Morice and Lakes Innovative Forest Practices Agreement (M&L IFPA). This ongoing project involves various local stakeholders and community interests (including six licensees, managing agencies, First Nations, and local interest groups and communities). A community involvement process has been implemented and scenario planning teams identified resource objectives and management strategies that were spatially and temporally forecasted and analyzed using Tesera’s modeling technologies.

Detailed Forest Management Plan and Related Analytical Work

Description: Tesera Systems Inc. Developed Spatial Harvest blocks and applied sequencing of harvest using Remsoft’s Spatial Planning Suite (Spatial Woodstock and Stanley).  Provided analysis support in preparing revised Forest Management Plans to consider Mountain Pine Beetle policies enacted by the Alberta government.  Provided support running various grizzly bear models run in ArcGIS and Python.  Provided a peer review of the final plan prior to submission to the Alberta government.

Road Networking in the C5 Forest Management Unit

Description: Tesera Systems Inc. Developed a road network using the Linear Feature Projection Model and standard 20m DEM to spur levels (i.e. in-block forest roads) for a land base of 295,000 hectares.
